Minecraft Gold

Gold ore is an uncommon, naturally generated block that often appears next to stone near the bottom of the map. It can only appear in the lowest 32 layers, so it is rarely visible from the surface. Gold ore spawns in veins of 2 to 10 blocks, although two veins can spawn together to make a larger continuous vein. Each block between layer 1 and 32 has less than a 0.2 percent chance of spawning as gold ore. There are an average of 7.5 gold ore blocks in a single chunk. An iron or diamond pickaxe must be used to mine gold ore. The ore can be smelted using a furnace to produce gold ingots.

Interesting Facts

  • Gold ore was added to the game in the Classic 0.0.14a version.
  • When it was first introduced, gold ore was generated at much higher layers than it is now. It was not uncommon to see gold ore while walking on the terrain’s surface.
  • Mining gold ore with a gold pickaxe will break the block without dropping a resource – making it the only ore that cannot be mined by a tool made from the same material.
  • Gold tools can mine blocks faster that a tool made from any other resource, but they have the fewest uses.
