Minecraft Clay

Clay was once exceptionally rare due to a bug in its spawn coding, but it can now be found all over the surface of the Overworld. Its texture resembles that of sand and it is often found in large beds under or near natural water. You can gather clay with your bare hands or any type of tool, although it is most efficient to use a shovel. Each solid block of clay drops 4 clay resources, which can be combined to create the original block.

You can find clay by searching along river banks and coastlines, or by riding around in a boat staring at the ocean floor. Large clay deposits can spawn under the ocean, as well as in shallow water and on the coast, so it may take a few minutes to locate a large amount of it. Solid clay blocks have a very low blast resistance, so they are not a recommended building material in a hostile environment.

Interesting Facts

  • In real life, clay can be fabricated by soaking dirt in a pool of water for an extended period of time.
  • In previous versions of the game, a glitch prevented clay from spawning in locations that did not have the same numerical X and Z coordinate. This made the potential spawning area of clay a fraction of what it was meant to be.
  • Following natural rivers is a reliable way to locate a supply of clay.
